The Cartier Santos story unfolds at the dawn of the 20th century, a time when the world stood on the precipice of a technological revolution. Alberto Santos-Dumont, a pioneering Brazilian aviator and inventor, was at the forefront of this transformation. He designed 22 flying machines, shattered world records, and redefined the boundaries of possibility. During this era of innovation, Santos-Dumont met Louis Cartier, and their friendship became a catalyst for radical change.

In 1901, the aviator complained to Cartier about the difficulty of checking the time on his pocket watch while flying. Three years later, Cartier revolutionized watchmaking by inventing the first purpose-designed modern wristwatch for Santos-Dumont, and thus, the Santos was born. The Santos was a product of experimentation by two visionaries inspired by movement. Its distinctive square shape, echoing the refinement and symmetry of Parisian geometry, represented a break from traditional rounded watch shapes. The eight screws on the bezel, a miniature tribute to the proliferation of mechanical steel structures associated with the golden age of urban architecture, were a daring display of a functional element that had been previously concealed.

Over the decades, the Santos has maintained its status, reflecting the innovative and ever-changing spirit of its own age. The new Santos de Cartier watch stays true to this original philosophy while updating its design for modern lifestyles and comfort. The sleek lines of the bezel, focused on intelligent proportions and respect for the Santos aesthetic, accentuate the watch's dynamic style. The precisely weighted and measured case ensures a perfect fit on the wrist, optimizing both comfort and ergonomics. One of the defining elements in the Santos's history is its strap. The original leather strap was a totally new material in watchmaking, freeing the wearer from the restrictions of the pocket watch. The new Santos features an innovative interchangeable strap system, the Cartier QuickSwitch, which allows the wearer to easily switch between steel, gold, or calfskin straps to suit any occasion.

As we celebrate the legacy of the Santos and the visionary friendship that brought it to life, we invite you to discover the new Santos de Cartier watch and shop Savoir Flair’s favorites below.
