An Icon Launches an Icon: Beyoncé Inaugurates Atlantis the Royal in Dubai

Queen Bey and Atlantis the Royal are a match made in heaven.

In a cheeky nod to her four-plus years away from the stage, the world’s most-celebrated performer, Beyoncé, opened with a stunning rendition of the Etta James classic, “At Last”, as she inaugurated the Grand Reveal of the world’s most ultra-luxury resort, Atlantis the Royal, in Dubai.

In an unforgettable performance, an invite-only audience of just over 1,000 guests gathered beneath the resort’s iconic façade to witness the global icon put on a 73-minute show that included an emotional duet with her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy (the two sang together on ‘Brown Skin Girl’), as well as a surprise performance by The Mayyas, the Lebanese, all-female alternative precision dance group that won Season 17 of America's Got Talent and who recently took the world by storm.

The superstar, reportedly paid $24 million for the one-night-only concert, was accompanied by Firdaus, a 48-person all-female orchestra mentored by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, under the leadership of Her Excellency Reem al Hashimy. Paying homage to the incredible creatives from our region, Beyoncé opened the show wearing a yellow number by Dubai-based Atelier Zuhra, and followed with a second look by Lebanese fashion sensation Nicolas Jebran.

The awe-inspiring production was heavy on the ballads, with powerful vocals on her biggest career-spanning hits, and featured high-energy choreography as her backup dancers opened with Victorian-inspired petticoats and drummers wore baroque face masks gilded in gold. While the superstar didn’t perform any songs from her latest release, the groundbreaking ‘Renaissance’, fans did catch sight of what may be in store visually for this new era.

In a breathtaking finale that featured her biggest-ever hit, 'Drunk In Love', Beyoncé was raised sixteen feet in the air while surrounded by water and fire, closing the magnificent show with a fireworks and drone extravaganza that lit up the entire island of the Palm Jumeirah.

Atlantis the Royal, which only opened its doors for two days for this Grand Reveal weekend, is set to open officially on February 10. The newest iconic landmark of Dubai, the property — eight years in the making — has been crafted by the world’s leading designers and architects as a destination that challenges the boundaries of imagination.
