Balenciaga Enters the Shadowlands

by Grace Gordon 3-minute read July 23, 2023

Balenciaga couture comes to life in this stunning editorial, featuring both archival and new couture creations and incredible shadow play.

Whether it’s the slouch of Demna’s oversized ballgowns or the amplified lines of Cristóbal’s barrel or ‘Infanta’ dresses, the words “Balenciaga” and “silhouette” are synonymous. When Demna first revived couture for Balenciaga, we reveled in his steadfast commitment to the house founder’s silhouettes. With painstaking care, he brought back cocooning necklines, sharply articulated waistlines and padded hips, magnificently enormous ball gowns, electrified feathers, and more.

It was a celebration of silhouette and the marvels of couture engineering, and he has continued this work in his haute couture collections ever since. Because of the importance of silhouette – which is the house’s heritage throughline from Cristóbal to Demna – Savoir Flair’s editorial shoot highlights the silhouette in a spectacular way – by pronouncing its depth and making it larger than life.

The jaw-dropping lines of Balenciaga’s archival and new couture looks make for beautiful shadows. We imagined those shadows on a preposterous scale. We amplified, doubled, and distorted the shadow silhouettes in this editorial shoot for striking visuals that arrest the imagination. Here, shadows also metaphorically represent the shadow self, the parts of ourselves that lie below the levels of consciousness. This editorial, which features archival couture looks from Balenciaga’s 50th couture collection (2021 Couture) and the 51st couture collection (2022 Couture) along with the latest 52nd couture collection (2023 Couture), was shot in Paris shortly after the house’s Paris Haute Couture Week show. Small nods to the works of Cristóbal came in the form of a muslin-draped floor and greige backgrounds, but we focused primarily on elevating the magnificent creations Demna has brought into the 21st century. In this way, the house’s past, present, and future are honored.
