A weekend of abalone, frankincense, constellations, and lots of camels.

“This is my secret spot; I love coming here to watch the sea turtles,” my tour guide remarked as he pointed out several sea turtles swimming meters out from the shore. They put on a show, occasionally surfacing for air. This unplanned detour showcased my guide's adventurous spirit, adding an unexpected thrill to my first morning in Salalah, Oman.

Having arrived the previous evening and checked in at Alila Hinu Bay, I was surprised to find myself awake early without an alarm, despite a lack of the usual pre-travel excitement. Suffering from decision fatigue and feeling uninspired to choose between activities, I was grateful that the Alila Hinu Bay team had taken charge of planning my day. My daily routine, usually dictated by a demanding schedule, was wearing me down, leading to burnout and a disconnection from life offline.

This moment of tranquility with the sea turtles set the stage for a picturesque holiday, during which we explored Salalah and Mirbat's picturesque landscapes, from the lush greenery of Wadi Darbat to the breathtaking Jabal Samhan.

Salalah, the capital of Oman's Dhofar region, is a cultural and trade hub with a rich history spanning centuries. It's a paradise for nature enthusiasts, offering an abundance of wildlife both on land and in the surrounding azure waters. Oman promises thrilling experiences for those seeking more than just relaxation on the beach – although that remains an option, too.

ALILA HINU BAY

Alila Hinu Bay is the perfect starting point to experience the best of Salalah’s and Mirbat’s treasures. Set along a wide, untouched beachfront and surrounded by majestic rocky terrain, it epitomizes coastal serenity, pairing renowned Omani hospitality with Alila Hotels' adventurous spirit.

Seaside Sanctuary

Located on Oman's southwest coast, Alila Hinu Bay is a 70-minute drive from Salalah Airport. The journey to the hotel offers breathtaking roadside scenery, inspiring me to roll down the car window every few minutes to capture snippets. Herds of camels, cattle, and donkeys are also common and delightful sights during the drive. Spread over a wide expanse, the hotel features an untouched beachfront that opens onto the Arabian Sea. The closest town, Mirbat, was once a prominent 17th-century trading post renowned for its incense and Arabian horses.

Suite Stay

Overlooking a private beach with mountain views, Alila Hinu Bay offers a relaxing getaway suitable for all types of travelers. Whether guests opt for a comfortable weekend stay or a longer family vacation, the resort accommodates all needs with its 96 guest rooms and 16 villas. These villas vary from one-bedroom to two-bedroom configurations, and some include private pools, all designed to blend comfort with luxury.

I had the pleasure of staying in a Terrace Sea View villa. The path to it blended seamlessly with the natural landscape, gently sloping through the hills as if carved by ancient ancestors. The villa itself was the epitome of organic, breezy perfection – spacious and modern, yet still warm and inviting. Inside, it featured a plush seating area, a dressing room, a luxurious bathtub, and all the amenities to make my entire stay comfortable.

The villa overlooks stunning views of the Arabian Sea. Large sliding doors opened up to a private outdoor terrace, perfect for soaking up the sunshine and sea breeze during the day. In the evenings, I enjoyed gazing at the ever-changing constellations, discovering something new each night. Coming from Dubai, the overwhelming presence of natural beauty was not only surreal but also recentering – exactly what I needed to realign amid the mental clutter of my life back home.

Food Matters

Alila Hinu Bay prioritizes ingredient-led dining, ensuring that all the food served on-site is authentic to the hotel’s locale and specializes in seafood and traditional flavors. The property features two main dining venues. Seasalt offers a variety of freshly caught seafood from Mirbat’s fishing port, served in an airy, expansive dining room or on a terrace overlooking the lagoon. Meanwhile, The Orchard provides a farm-to-table experience, where chefs prepare dishes using ingredients harvested just minutes before serving.

During my stay, Seasalt had just launched its much-awaited Omani Abalone Degustation Menu. This special dining experience results from years of collaboration with Oman Aquaculture, allowing the hotel exclusive access to the first batch of abalone harvested from the facility. The menu celebrates the versatility and richness of Omani abalone with signature dishes, including abalone sashimi, steamed abalone, and the decadent abalone gratin. Traditionally in Oman, abalone is simply grilled and sprinkled with seasoning. With Seasalt’s interpretation, the dishes introduce a variety of unexpected flavor combinations, offering a creative departure from the traditional way of cooking it.

R&R

Wellness and relaxation are central to the offerings at Spa Alila Hinu Bay, drawing inspiration from the Dhofar region's significant role in the historic Frankincense Route. Frankincense, as precious as gold and spices, was once considered Arabia’s most valuable product, attracting royalty, voyagers, and traders from around the globe. The finest variety, known as hojari, is sourced from the unique microclimate of Oman’s Dhofar Mountains. The spa’s signature massage features hojari frankincense, skillfully applied with the therapist’s expertise to provide stress relief and a calming effect.

Additionally, I highly recommend participating in a yoga or meditation class after your treatment. Sunset Yoga at The Dolphin Viewpoint, in particular, offers guided meditation designed to help you achieve a serene and centered state of mind. Take a moment to listen to the soothing sounds of nature – the gentle sea waves and birdsong – which melt away your stress and worries, empowering you to face the next day with renewed strength.

Adventure Time

Throughout my stay at Alila Hinu Bay, it was clear that the staff was genuinely dedicated to enriching the guests' experiences. While there are plenty of options for thrill-seekers, such as seaside mountain biking, hiking, and cave explorations, I opted for the more relaxed cultural activities.

A visit to the nearby old town of Mirbat was a highlight, with its lively fish market, religious sites, and beautiful Islamic architecture. Additionally, a scenic drive to Jabal Samhan, Dhofar's highest peak, is highly recommended. There, you can view the magnificent Tawi Ateer sinkhole and Teeq Cave, enjoying a blend of history and nature with stunning views across Oman; t's also the perfect spot for a picnic lunch under the clouds. And no trip to Dhofar is complete without a stop at the scenic Wadi Darbat. While there are hiking trails available, simply taking in the views of the waterfalls and lush greenery is enough to rejuvenate the mind. Capping my experience at the resort was a breezy and educational trip to Oman Aquaculture, a surprise excursion arranged by the staff who, by this time, seemed to know me incredibly well.
