Alaa Tarabzouni interprets Riyadh's redevelopment artistically in Remember to Forget.

Amidst the rich tapestry of history on the walls of the Louvre Abu Dhabi emerges Remember to Forget – a striking triptych of monochromatic stained-glass panels crafted by Alaa Tarabzouni. As one of the eight finalists in the esteemed 2023 Richard Mille Art Prize, Tarabzouni's installation offers a poignant reflection on her hometown of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and its impending redevelopment, blending tradition with innovation in her artistic expression.

Responding to this year’s theme of ‘Transparencies,’ Remember to Forget offers a unique exploration of light, texture, and memory. Departing from conventional stained glass techniques, Tarabzouni treats each panel with a unique approach, infusing subtle variations in texture and opacity. The result is a captivating monochromatic image that invites viewers to contemplate the intricate layers of Riyadh's history and transformation.

Tarabzouni's interdisciplinary approach to art and design is evident in Remember to Forget. With a career spanning over a decade in the arts and culture sector in Saudi Arabia, she brings a wealth of experience as both a curator and a practicing artist to her work. Having served as the Director of ATHR Gallery and as a Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Culture of Saudi Arabia, Tarabzouni's deep understanding of the arts informs her creative process.

The installation stands as a nuanced tribute to changing landscapes and the delicate interplay between memory and redevelopment. Tarabzouni contemplates various types of boundaries — both visible and invisible; physical and psychological. The delicacy of the stained glass panels suggests ephemeral glimpses of Riyadh’s intimate streets and rhythms of life, delicately rediscovering the flows and forms that define a community.

As Saudi Arabia continues to face rapid redevelopment, the installation captures the delicate balance between memory and progress. Remember to Forget is a reflection on the complexities of urban transformation.
