In the hands of designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, this label has undergone a radical transformation. This gown-and-glam-centric design house has descended from the throne to bestow their blessing of functional, demure basics to the everyday woman.

Karl Lagerfeld displayed a foreboding vision of the future on his fall/winter runway this year. His dangerous and unsentimental look at a post-apocalyptic world was enhanced by a backdrop of smoldering rubble (lit like an Ingmar Bergman film) and frayed, unraveling ensembles. Lagerfeld knows how to weave an engaging narrative into his collections and this might be his most audacious story told to date.
