Milan Fashion Week Coverage
Gianfranco Ferré Spring 2012
Though Stefano Citron and Federico Piaggi are relatively new designers, tasked with the responsibility of assuming the lead at Gianfranco Ferre, they have done well by sticking to the traditional Ferre ethos. Ferre was, at one time, a student of architecture, and this fact has been reflected in each of his collections until his passing in 2007. Citron and Piaggi honor his memory by producing a crisp, austere, architecturally-inspired collection that will appeal to Type-A fashionistas everywhere.
The angularity of the outfits is the most obvious nod to architecture influence. Though, in architecture, balance is often the ultimate value, and this collection is comprised of many off-kilter looks. Collars run askew, draping is asymmetrical, but the clothes are handsome and sophisticated so that the unbalanced nature of their construction becomes an interesting detail rather than a problem. A few of the later looks were decorated in feathers so frizzy they look electrocuted. The liquid metal of the belts and shoes in this collection really shone, and complimented the fluid silk shorts and dresses. For restrained, but artistic elegance, look no further than Ferre.
