Milan Fashion Week Coverage
DSquared2 Spring 2012
On the Dsquared2 runway, fun comes first, and this is perhaps their most fun show to date. Dsquared2 focused centrally on clothes kids wear to summer festivals, and, thus was borne the most youth-oriented collection at Milan Fashion Week. From a muddy runway to mud-smeared male models in the background, Dsquared2 transformed their runway into a post-rain trek at Glastonbury.
High-heeled wellies made the slippery walk down the runway possible, and were paired with shorts, bikinis, leather pants with quilted knee patches, and maxi skirts with thigh-high slits. This collection was unmistakably influenced by the hippie/boho trend with patchwork-embroidered vests, cloche hats, multiple layers, beading and fringe in abundance. Strangely enough the American flag was emblazoned on several pieces like a skimpy bikini, and several one-shoulder tops (one of which was paired with a camo hat). Some of the male models clutched a bottle of beer on their way down the runway, adding to the non-stop party atmosphere of the show. The Dsquared2 duo turned in a literal take on a “hairshirt” with a long tunic dress made of gossamer-fine fringe that so resembled hair that it looked like the model was wearing Cousin It. While Dsquared2 has not innovated anything this season – all of these looks have been worn in some way by festivalgoers for decades – they did renovate and modernize the looks on their runway. The only misstep was the music: no hipster girl who’d wear a fur stole to Glastonbury would be caught dead listening to U2 or Coldplay.
