Paris Fashion Week Coverage: Elie Saab Fall 2013

We tend to negatively connote the word “formulaic”. As in, “Goodness, that Aaron Sorkin show is so formulaic!” However, when you’re talking formulas and fashion, there are none so refined as Elie Saab’s. What he’s struck upon is sartorial gold, and his canon of red carpet celebrities count among the many boons to sticking with what works.

For Fall/Winter 2013, Saab darkens his palette with a mix of navy and black looks for daywear and spends a little more time developing his day pieces than usual. Other than that, we are invited to watch the unfolding elegance of another gorgeous, glittering Saab collection, and those that know what to expect will not be disappointed. His early looks are cut close to the body, and contrast inserts give them a modish appeal. Here a mesh bustier can be found enhancing a full-skirted frock; there a starchy jacket juts atop a high-waisted pencil skirt. Floral prints, sheer inserts, lace, and peplum enhance the femininity of the looks to which they are attached, but even a plainer version would carry the selfsame message. His best look is a frosty white gown that is snaked with intricate beaded patterns, recalling the finer points of a snowflake. Capes and sophisticated outerwear give us the opportunity to wear his silky, light looks out-of-doors next season. With an increased focus on daywear comes the ability to wear Saab at times where an invitation is not required.
