Paris Fashion Week Coverage: Saint Laurent Fall 2013

New name, new designer, and new direction – this season at Saint Laurent was all about the new. Strangely enough, this scene was accomplished by recycling 90s grunge looks, but in Hedi Slimane’s hands, the outfits were threatening, bold, and inherently luxurious. Luxury and good tailoring are key selling points of the Yves Saint Laurent brand, and Slimane sticks to these codes while interpreting Fall/Winter trends his own unique way.

There were hints of the popular menswear trend in the form of masculine blazers, but they made plenty of sense when paired with babydoll dresses and plaid blouses. He hits all of the grunge highlights – grandpa cardigans, black tights, black buckle-covered boots – but he doesn’t let them hijack what is essentially a glamorous, irreverent collection. There are plenty of sparkly dresses, gorgeous fur coats and sexy leather looks in the mix as well. The real 90s grunge girl would find her thrift store pairings in a dumpster behind a burned out apartment complex. The Saint Laurent girl carefully considers her silhouette before slipping on a slim-shouldered leopard coat or flower-scattered frock. As disparate as grunge and luxe are, Slimane manages to marry the two worlds seamlessly. However, his real accomplishment here is that he likely hooked a younger generation of fans with all of these wearable, street-savvy looks.
