Paris Fashion Week Coverage: Giambattista Valli Fall 2013

For Fall/Winter 2013, Giambattista Valli reveals his practical side, but even pragmatism in his hands looks dreamy and inviting. His mostly neutral palette – broken up by a few lovely floral prints, animal prints, and pops of tomato-red – still sparkled under the lights of the runway. He accomplished this sheen by working metallic thread and fabrics into many of his outfits. Even scaled back, there wasn’t a dull look in the bunch.

Next season, there are plenty of daywear and eveningwear choices for the Valli girl. For day, she’ll be sporting pastel silk tracksuits, fur-hooded parkas, ruched silk turban skirts, fur vests, and distressed knit turtlenecks. For evening, she’ll dazzle in fur shift dresses inset with sheer paneling, high-collared frocks, one-shoulder dresses with fur peplum attachments, and lithe sequin and chiffon maxi gowns. This collection flips easily through a myriad of desirable looks: there’s streetwear chic in leather vests and layers, there’s a night at the opera in a voluminous, dramatic printed pantsuit, and there’s gala fare in that pastel, paillette scattered A-line dress. Valli is good at giving us options, and this time around he also reminds us that practicality need not sacrifice glamour.
